Town Wide YARD SALE 

September 15th, 9am – 2pm

Yard Sales all over town. This is THE day for bargain lovers.

Official start is 9 am but many start earlier.
Rain or shine!

Pick up a map & listing sheet and follow the sales.
Maps will be available starting at 7:00 a.m. at the Town Clerk’s Office in the window. They will also be available on‑line, see link below.

Backyard Woods Program

A course for Vermont homeowners interested in caring for their woods

  • Do you own less than 25 acres?
  • Are you interested in becoming a more active steward of your woods?

Then you may be interested in the Backyard Woods Program!

The Backyard Woods Program is an online course targeted at teaching homeowners with 25 acres or less about their woods and how they can be caretakers of it! Whether you own 2 acres or 20 acres, this program will help you make the most out of the woods in your backyard!

Course Details:

  • The online course starts Sept. 24 and runs through Nov. 3.
  • Participants will also be invited to an in-person Backyard Woods field walk (TBD).
  • This course is composed of 4 online sections. Each section has videos, webinars, and activities aimed at helping you develop a stewardship action plan with a project schedule.

Self-Paced: This online course is self-paced and all activities are to be completed on your own schedule during the course, with the exception of the live webinars and in-person walks.  The course schedule is intended to keep you on track to complete the course in 6 weeks. This flexibility allows you to complete all activities and watch videos when you have time each week. You can expect to spend 1.5-3 hours each week on the course.

Registration:  The course costs $30 per family, before September 16, or $40 (on September 17 or afterwards). Learn more and register at vtcommunityforestry.org.

2018 Master Composter Course: Registration is Open!

I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful Vermont summer we are having! We are announcing that registration is now open for the 2018 Master Composter Course! This course is provided in collaboration with the Agency of Natural Resources through grant funding, and the self-funded UVM Extension Master Gardener Program. Please see the details below where you will find the link to the course registration website.

With Vermont’s Universal Recycling Law (Act 148) ban of disposal of food scraps in landfills by 2020, courses such as this play an important role in educating communities on the need for composting. In fact, one of the class lectures is specific to learning more about this law.

MEMORY TREE 2017 LIGHTING 12/3 4PM

                   22nd ANNUAL

        MEMORY TREE 2017

The Whiting Volunteer Fire Department established the Whiting Memory tree 22 years ago to honor the memory of Vicki Grandchamp, a Whiting teenager who died in an accident. It has become a community event for all who wish to remember those who have died, by purchasing one or more lights on the memory tree.

Join us at the Fire Station for the tree-lighting ceremony on

Sunday, December 3rd, at 4:00 p.m

How can you participate? Individual lights may be purchased on the Tree in memory of a loved one. Lights are $1, and you may purchase as many as you wish, including more than 1 light per individual. Names of those being remembered will be published, and also posted at the Town Clerk’s Office. Those having more than one bulb purchased will be indicated in this manner: John Doe (3), Jane Doe (2).

December 1st- To be assured of inclusion in the reading of the names ceremony and the Town Report, we need to receive your names and check no later than December 1st. This annual event benefits the Fire Department, adds a beautiful lighted tree to the community and allows you to remember a loved one in a meaningful way. This event has come to provide a “coming together” of the community for an evening of remembering and celebrating.

Mark Your Calendars – Join us at the Fire Station for the tree-lighting ceremony on Sunday, December 3rd, at 4:00 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. We hope your family will attend and take part in the brief ceremony. If you would like to be involved (music, bake cookies, serving, etc.) contact Stacey Freeguard (623-6065) or Chief Mike Wilbur (989-1722)

The Backyard Woods Program is a six-week online course that uses a combination of video’s, webinars, discussion forums and weekly activities to guide you in the exploration of your backyard woods.  Upon completion of the program, you will have developed an action plan to help you get started!

Whether you own 2 acres or 20 acres, this program will help you make the most out of the woods in your backyard!
Course Details:
*The online course starts Sept. 18 and runs through the week of Oct. 23.
*Participants will also be invited to an in-person Backyard Woods Field Day (TBD).
*This course is composed of 4 online modules. Each module has videos, webinars, and activities that will be completed on your own schedule for the duration of the course.

Registration:  The course costs $35, which includes a course manual, a tree identification book and a hands-on in person session.

Woodlands and Wildlife Training Workshop

Do you love your woodland?  Enjoy seeing birds and other wildlife? Want to learn how a healthy forest can enhance wildlife habitat, provide recreational and timber benefits?  Are you interested in reaching out to others in your community?  If you answered yes to any of these then this program is for you!  Join us for the Coverts 3-day Woodland Owner Training sponsored by Vermont Coverts:  Woodlands for Wildlife.  It will allow you to connect with resource professionals and others while learning how you can improve your woodland.  The next training dates are September 8-10 and there are still spaces available.  We will be at Kehoe Conservation Camp on the shores of Lake Bomoseen.  The Training is FREE (a deposit refundable upon completion holds your spot) and includes all meals, lodging and materials.  To learn more, see a sample agenda or download an application visit our website at www.vtcoverts.org.  You can also contact us by calling Lisa Sausville at 802-877-2777 or e-mail lisa@vtcoverts.org.
